This summer, the first show I stumbled upon was Ang Mutya ng Section E.
It was the middle of April. I was buried under coding assignments, prepping for college presentations, and juggling office commitments… and right in the middle of that chaos, I discovered this series on YouTube.
I randomly watched a few shorts—and I got hooked.
Funny thing is, I had never watched anything from the Philippines before. The show is in their native language, and although I did find some videos with English subtitles, even the ones beyond my comprehension were still wildly entertaining…
Ang Mutya ng Section E (season 1) is adapted from 1st installment of the novel with the same name, authored by Lara Flores in Wattpad.
The Premise:
Ang Mutya ng Section E translates to The Jewels of Section E. The story revolves around the lives of Class 12 students from Section E in High Value International School.
Section E didn’t always exist. It was created as a dumping ground for all the rule-breakers—the rogue students who couldn’t be expelled permanently because of their rich, influential families with deep ties to the school board.
Enter Jasper Jean Mariano, a 16-year-old girl transferred to Class 12, Section E.
The moment she joins, she realizes she’s the only girl in the class. The class president, Keifer, is hostile from the beginning, and the rest of the boys quickly fall in line behind him to make her time at school a living hell.
Jay Jay has a dark past—something we’re not told about right away.
She had to change schools for a fresh start. She’s never met her father, and her mother jumps between relationships and marriages. Jay Jay used to live with her grandmother until a heart attack—brought on by Jay’s own actions—changed everything. Now, she lives with her step-aunt Gemma. Her eldest son, Angelo, is an influential man who got her into HVIS.
She also has another cousin, Aries, who’s cold and distant towards her.
Jay Jay doesn’t remember all the details of her past, but one thing’s clear: she just wants peace. She’s determined to avoid trouble this time—for her aunt’s sake, and her own.
But trouble finds Jay Jay like moths find fire…
In her first few days, Keifer and his crew lock her up in the classroom to clean it. They snatch her tiffins and force her to fetch food for everyone from the cafeteria.
Amidst all that madness, Jay Jay meets Ci N—a 14-year-old prodigy accelerated into their class, the former class president David, and a red-haired guy named Yuri, who’s as hot-tempered as Keifer.
Despite all the shouting and rude behavior, Jay Jay can’t deny the strange sexual tension between her and Keifer. Slowly, she begins to unravel the tangled history of Section E—Keifer and Yuri’s shared love interest, Ella (who is also Aries’s current girlfriend); how Section E got banned from the cafeteria; and so much more.
Jay Jay clings to her place in Section E with everything she has. And just when she begins to feel at home, things blow up.
Her relationship with Aries is revealed to the class. Keifer and Yuri—along with the rest of the boys—decide to get revenge on Aries… using her, because of past beef.
Keifer vows to make her fall in love with him, only to break her heart.
Unaware of this scheme, Jay Jay gets even more involved with Section E—like it’s her own family.
She helps Eman’s restaurant during a rough patch, mends Calix’s relationship with Mica, helps Felix get on the basketball team, emotionally supports the closeted gay couple Kita and Mayo in class, consoles Denzel after he accidentally gets his girlfriend pregnant, defends Ci N when he’s wrongly accused of stealing… the list goes on.
And slowly, the boys begin to change too.
Jay Jay gets hurt by common enemies of Section E—and the boys, including Keifer, come to her rescue.
Her bond with Keifer and Yuri deepens.
She confesses her feelings for Keifer to Yuri… not knowing that Yuri harbors feelings for her too. He stays silent—for a while.
Jay Jay also suffers from psychotic episodes rooted in her past. She gets extremely violent at the sight of blood, later forgetting everything that happened. The cause isn’t fully revealed, but Keifer catches her during one of these episodes… and instead of judging, he gently takes care of her.
He even helps her search for her biological father.
During the school function, both Keifer and Yuri dedicate their performances to Jay Jay.
While her connection with Keifer runs deep, she also has a lingering crush on Yuri.
Then comes Christmas Eve. Yuri proposes to Jay Jay.
Drunk and confused, she doesn’t answer right away.
New Year’s Eve rolls around, and Jay Jay is invited to Yuri’s family party—along with her own.
She’s dancing with Yuri, sneaking glances at Keifer in the distance—who seems to be chatting with his ex, Ella.
The party? It’s an engagement announcement.
Jay Jay and Yuri are getting married.
Turns out, Angelo’s company—Fernandez Corps—is going bankrupt. The only way to save it? A merger with Yuri’s family business, the Hanamichis. After some initial hesitation, Angelo and Aunt Gemma decide to go through with the deal… and the engagement.
Keifer is at the party—drunk and heartbroken.
He had confessed his feelings for Jay Jay to Yuri… just minutes before Yuri proposed to her on Christmas Eve.
During the engagement party Keifer pulls Jay Jay into a lift and confronts her. But their conversation is cut short when others enter. Later, during the countdown to midnight, Keifer finds her again. He confesses his love—again. This time, Jay Jay kisses him as a response to his proposal.
Even though she’s engaged to his best friend… and the whole thing is tangled in a business deal… Keifer vows to fight for her.
With this Ang Mutya Ng Section E, season 1 concludes, leaving the fans swooning, crying, smiling- feeling all too excited for the next season!!
My Fangirl Commentary:
- Every single cast member in Section E is good-looking! And what’s even better—they actually look like high school students!
- Keifer, played by Andres Mulach, will give you butterflies… Rabin brings life to the heir of the Hanamichis, Yuri, in the best way possible. And Ashtine as Jay Jay? The perfect mix of sweet and psycho.
- The leads have crazy good chemistry. One moment you’re rooting for Keifer and Jay Jay—and the next, Yuri sweeps you off your feet with a smile.
- Unlike most teen dramas full of slow-motion romance scenes, AMNSE is packed with action. Jay Jay is a certified baddie. She doesn’t flinch when it comes to throwing punches.
- The Section E boys are effortlessly real. The friendships, teasing, fights—it all feels natural.
- I forgot to mention earlier—Aries might act distant, but he’s super protective of Jay Jay. When one of his classmates, Kiko, spikes her drink, Aries beats the guy to a pulp and saves her—then asks her friends not to tell her. So maybe… not such a bad guy after all.
- Keifer has a tough past—his mother’s dead, and he kicked out his abusive father and stepmother from the house. Keifer is single-handedly raising his two younger brothers and clearly resents his dad. There’s pain buried deep in him.
- Yuri looks like a soft-spoken prince… but he’s a player. He knew about Jay Jay and Keifer’s feelings for each other, and still proposed. At first, he seemed hurt by Keifer’s mixed signals—but slowly, he reveals himself to be a smooth operator.
- My favorite moments have to be – the birth of profanity rule (I’m pretty sure that scene has fanbase of its own), the pregnancy test, Jay-Jay kissing her ‘type’ for Ci N’s bet… there are so many more, tell yours in the comments!
Overall it’s a lovely show about love, friendship and family. If you haven’t watched it already, do give it a try 🙂
Well, that’s all I have for today… Good thing is shooting for Season 2 will start soon!!!
