Dressing Down the Devil: A Review of ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ #344

Let’s face it, sometimes you just need a movie about fabulous clothes, hilarious meltdowns, and the ultimate question: is this dream job worth your sanity? That’s where “The Devil Wears Prada” slides in, a chick flick with a surprising amount of bite.

The Devil You Know: Inspiration and Behind the Scenes

The film’s plot is loosely based on the experiences of Lauren Weisberger, who worked as an assistant at Vogue under the legendary editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour. Wintour is known for her icy demeanor and laser focus on the fashion industry. While the movie isn’t a straight-up biography, it captures the whirlwind world of high fashion and the demanding nature of working for such a powerful figure.

Speaking of powerful figures, the cast of “The Devil Wears Prada” is about as A-list as you can get. Meryl Streep takes on the role of Miranda Priestly, the tyrannical editor with a wardrobe that could kill. Streep, a chameleon of an actress, disappears into Miranda, delivering a performance that’s both terrifying and strangely captivating (seriously, the cerulean monologue is award-worthy on its own).

This isn’t Streep’s first rodeo with powerhouse roles. She’s known for her incredible range, having played everything from a terrifying opera singer in “Death Becomes Her” to the warm and wise Roberta Guallini in “The Bridges of Madison County.”

Our protagonist, Andy Sachs, is played by the ever-charming Anne Hathaway. Andy is a recent graduate thrown into the fashion world, completely lost at sea. Hathaway perfectly portrays Andy’s initial confusion and eventual transformation, keeping her relatable even as she navigates the world of couture.

Fun fact: Hathaway actually wore a size 4 in the movie, despite typically being a size 0 or 2.

This wasn’t Hathaway and Streep’s first time sharing the screen. They previously co-starred in the comedy “Shark Tale,” where they voiced animated characters.

The Runway to Success: Reception and Legacy

“The Devil Wears Prada” was a critical and commercial success. Audiences loved the humor, the fashion, and the story of a young woman finding her own voice. Critics praised the performances, particularly Streep’s, who landed yet another Oscar nomination for her portrayal of Miranda.

The film has become a pop culture staple, with quotes like “Florals for spring? Groundbreaking” and “That’s all?” still being referenced today. It also launched a thousand memes, from Andy’s bewildered expressions to Miranda’s icy stares.

Double Trouble: Where Else Have We Seen Them?

While Streep and Hathaway are the main draw, the supporting cast is equally fantastic. Emily Blunt shines as Emily Charlton, Andy’s snarky and stylish co-assistant. Blunt has since gone on to star in action films like “Edge of Tomorrow” and thrillers like “A Quiet Place” (though let’s be honest, nothing is quieter than Miranda Priestly’s office).

Stanley Tucci, who plays Nigel Van Der Woodsen (yes, that’s the name!), the empathetic art director, brings a touch of warmth to the film. Tucci is a character actor extraordinaire, having played roles as diverse as Caesar Flickerman in “The Hunger Games” and Jack Woltz in “The Godfather.”

The Verdict: Is It Worth the Watch?

Absolutely! “The Devil Wears Prada” is a fun, frothy film with enough depth to keep you thinking. It’s a classic coming-of-age story wrapped in designer labels, with a healthy dose of humor and girl power.
