Descendants of the Sun (2016): Romance between Soldier and Surgeon #434

The show I almost didn’t want to watch: Descendants of the Sun (2016). I was just done with my summer break and needed to bring my focus back to studies. On top of that, I had a huge backlog of TV shows waiting to be reviewed. Did I really need to add another one to the list?

But then… along came Song Hye-kyo. I had already seen her in Encounter (2018), and a familiar face always pulls me in. Before long, my feed was flooded with endless clips of her and Song Joong-ki together. A love story between a soldier and a surgeon? That definitely added some diversity to my K-drama collection. So yes, despite my best intentions, I ended up binge-watching the whole thing in just a couple of days!

The Cast

  • Song Joong-ki as Captain Yoo Si-jin
Joong-ki as the charming yet lethal special forces captain was pure perfection. His cheeky smile, witty comebacks, and effortless ability to switch from playful to serious made Si-jin unforgettable.
To me, Song Joong-ki has this unusual quality—he looks like a little boy and a grown man at the same time, and oddly enough, he doesn’t seem to age at all. (Though, to be fair, many actors worldwide have that magical trait.)
Some of his other popular works include Vincenzo (2021), where he plays a Mafia lawyer of South Korean-Italian descent.
  • Song Hye-kyo as Dr. Kang Mo-yeon
Elegant, grounded, and fiercely independent—Hye-kyo brought Kang Mo-yeon to life with just the right balance of strength and vulnerability. The best thing about her character is that she’s not the stereotypical damsel in distress.
Here, Hye-kyo’s character feels much livelier compared to her role in Encounter (2018), where she played the refined CEO of a luxury hotel.
And her chemistry with Joong-ki? Absolutely effortless. I can totally see why fans went crazy when the two started dating in real life, eventually getting married—and then, heartbreakingly, separated just two years later. A painful reminder that reel life is always very different from real life.
  • Jin Goo as Sergeant Seo Dae-young
If Yoo Si-jin was the playful charmer, Seo Dae-young was the strong, silent type. Loyal to a fault, stoic in demeanor, and with eyes that told you everything words couldn’t, Jin Goo played the perfect soldier’s soldier. His bromance with Si-jin was honestly as iconic as the main romance.
  • Kim Ji-won as Yoon Myung-ju
The military doctor who refused to give up on her love for Seo Dae-young—Kim Ji-won was feisty, passionate, and had some of the most memorable confrontations in the series.
Her other memorable works include Fight for My Way (2017) and Queen of Tears (2024).
  • And personally I found the second leads (both Jin Goo and Kim Ji-won) more attractive and compelling than the first leads… but more on that later.

The Plot

Captain Yoo Si-jin and Sergeant Seo Dae-young first meet Dr. Kang Mo-yeon by chance—while trying to retrieve Dae-young’s stolen phone from a thief, who just so happens to also be Mo-yeon’s patient.

Mo-yeon is a capable surgeon: invincible in the operating room but lacking the political connections and financial backing needed to climb the career ladder smoothly.

Si-jin falls for her at first sight. He admires her dedication and perseverance, while Mo-yeon is drawn to him as a mysterious, striking man. But since both of their professions don’t allow space for fluffy romance, their relationship is anything but smooth. Si-jin often leaves abruptly for secret missions, which makes Mo-yeon skeptical and dissatisfied with his line of work.

Eventually, they break up over their conflicting moral responsibilities. For Si-jin, as a soldier, following orders could mean taking lives. For Mo-yeon, as a doctor, saving lives without discrimination is a sworn duty.

But fate has other plans. Mo-yeon is sent as the head of a medical team to Uruk, a war-ridden land, and—who else but Captain Yoo Si-jin is deployed there too, tasked with safeguarding the doctors.

In Uruk, Mo-yeon begins to see firsthand the dangerous world Si-jin inhabits. He can never disclose his secret missions, but his dedication, sincerity, and courage sweep her off her feet once again. Earthquakes, medical emergencies, outbreaks—every crisis brings them closer, stripping away their doubts until they can no longer deny their feelings.

They never get the typical romance—no cozy movie dates, no grand candlelit dinners—but their love is expressed through saving each other’s lives in the most life-threatening of situations. Si-jin never doubts his feelings, while Mo-yeon hesitates, haunted by the part of his life she can never touch. But eventually, she learns to accept the soldier’s way of life—understanding that sometimes, protecting peace means taking a life or even sacrificing your own.

The Second Leads and Their Burning Love

Dr. Yoon Myung-ju, an army doctor and Mo-yeon’s junior from medical school, is deeply in love with Sergeant Seo Dae-young. But her father, a high-ranking army official, disapproves of the relationship. A protective father, he tries countless ways to keep them apart. For the longest time, Dae-young complies out of respect—choosing duty and honor over his heart.

But Myung-ju? She never wavers. She never once sets her eyes on another man, despite Dae-young’s coldness. And Dae-young, even while holding back his affection, never stops protecting her. He’s even willing to sacrifice his uniform for their love. Eventually, her father realizes his mistake and grants them his blessing.

Their story, filled with sacrifice, quiet devotion, and burning passion, was every bit as gripping as the main couple’s—and sometimes, even more.

The OST

My favorite track from the OST is “Once Again” by Kim Na-young & Mad Clown. It’s the background score tied to the second leads, and its bittersweet, wistful theme of tragic love and fate made their story even more unforgettable.

The entire OST, of course, was a masterpiece, but this song sealed my heart firmly with Seo Dae-young and Yoon Myung-ju.

My Fangirl Commentary

  1. Yoo Si-jin’s powerful entry: The scene where Si-jin leads his soldiers out of the helicopter to welcome the volunteer medical team in Uruk—pure chills. He absolutely owned that moment. And the way Mo-yeon looked at him—with admiration, respect, and just a hint of suppressed anger—priceless.
  2. Mo-yeon’s accidental confession: Si-jin had already confessed multiple times, but Mo-yeon was still holding back. Then comes the hilarious yet heart-stopping moment when a voice note of her private confession plays through the entire army base’s sound system instead of music. Mortified, she snatches her phone and tries to run, only for Si-jin to casually jump out of a window and walk right up to her like, “You can’t escape me now.” The whole scene was too hot to handle!
  3. The uniform romance: After Myung-ju’s father finally gives his blessing, she and Dae-young officially get back together. In the cafeteria, Dae-young orders all his juniors to close their eyes before kissing her forehead. Myung-ju then playfully asks them to do the same while she kisses him back. A simple moment, but oh, so adorable.

Final Verdict

All in all, I’d rate Descendants of the Sun an 8.2/10. The drama focused on celebrating the nobility of two professions—soldiers and doctors—while building a sincere romance between them.

There are no cheesy monologues, no grand declarations of love. Instead, it’s about two souls who’ve dedicated their lives to humanity—finding comfort in each other’s company, both in times of crisis and in rare moments of peace.

It wasn’t just a love story. It was about sacrifice, resilience, and the unspoken ways people show love when words aren’t enough. And that’s what made it so memorable.

Encounter (2018): Love is Just a Chance Way

Encounter (2018) is a gentle romance between Cha Soo-hyun, a lonely yet graceful CEO weighed down by her past, and Kim Jin-hyuk, a free-spirited young man who brings light into her life. What begins as a fleeting meeting in Cuba slowly blossoms into a tender love story, filled with quiet moments, respect, and the courage to choose happiness against all odds.
